Reducing hiss with Noise Reduction

Learn noise for three seconds, then reduce it before the signal enters the pedals.

Noise Reduction is in Input settings. It reduces noise using a learned profile before Trim, EQ, and every pedal. The profile follows the device, input channel, and sample rate; it does not change with the preset.

Learn the noise

  1. Choose the correct device and instrument channel.
  2. Use the pickup, guitar volume, and interface gain you will use while playing. Do not turn the guitar volume to zero just to capture a profile.
  3. Mute the strings so no notes or taps sound.
  4. Press Learn noise / 3 seconds and remain quiet for three seconds.
  5. When the profile is accepted, Noise Reduction becomes active. Start Reduction at 12 dB; its control ranges from 6 to 18 dB.

Learn noise estimates a spectrum. It does not save an audio recording or train AI. If the input clips, is too loud, is unavailable, or notes are detected, fix the reported condition and try again. The previous profile is kept if a new attempt fails.

Check what is being removed

Enable Listen removed noise to hear the removed part through the dry monitor with the pedals bypassed. Play quiet notes and hold them. If clear guitar notes appear in the removed sound, reduce Reduction or learn the profile again. Turn Listen removed noise off to return to the rig.

Higher Reduction can soften the pick or shorten sustain. Use the smallest amount that helps enough. A Noise Gate remains useful for pauses; its role differs from reducing noise while notes sound.

Device changes and latency

Changing the device, channel, sample rate, or acoustic input-mix configuration requires a matching profile. Learning again can also help after changing pickups, cables, or analog gain. Reset forgets the profile without changing presets or recordings.

When active, Noise Reduction adds 256 samples of delay, about 5.33 ms at 48 kHz. This is the processing stage's additional delay, rather than the entire round-trip latency. Once bypass has settled, this stage adds no delay. Raw DI recording remains before Noise Reduction; the rig recording includes the active processing.

Read Noise Gate and denoising to understand the difference.
