Chapter 20 / 21

Finding the cause of a sound problem

Trace missing sound, hiss, sustain loss, harsh fizz, dropouts, and MIDI problems from the symptom to the right stage.

SymptomCheck firstAvoid jumping to this conclusion
No soundDevice/channel, audio enabled, input meter, mute, tuner mute, output routingThe capture is broken
Clean audio remainsDirect monitor, parallel dry path, Blend, level entering driveEvery overdrive needs Blend
Hiss while playingSource noise, compressor Makeup, input gain/drive, where noise appearsA gate can always separate the noise
Sustain cuts offGate Threshold/Release, Auto Swell, input level, muteThe compressor is not turned up enough
Muffled toneDouble cabinet, amp+cab capture, low-mid, High cut, ToneTreble must be maximized
Sharp fizzCab/IR, mic voicing, Presence/high shelf, drive stagingAll distortion is ADC clipping
Crackles/dropoutsBuffer deadline, device/driver, preset load, sample-rate compatibilityThe guitar tone is poor
Red Peak but green RMSMeter type, interval/measurement point, actual CLIP/LIMITThe lower graph must be red too
Parallel paths lose bodyPolarity, delay alignment, cab EQ, merge levels, mono checkThe paths need maximum gain
MIDI Learn does not detectEnabled MIDI device, channel, CC vs Note, firmware, Apply mappingA MIDI cable carries audio
