Chapter 19 / 21

Comparing sounds fairly

Use the same source DI, the same clip boundaries, and a similar playback level.

Use the same source DI, the same clip boundaries, and a similar playback level. State whether playback is raw DI, rig output, a mix including backing, or a microphone recording. Do not compare different clips and conclude that one tone is better. Note the pickup, guitar/bass, onboard volume/tone, interface/channel, gain, sample rate, and preset.

Make short clips for a moderately picked single note, a hard-picked single note, hard-picked two- or three-note playing, and a chord. Record different pickups as separate takes. Eight seconds per take is enough for a short exercise. For the simulator, listen to middle and bridge separately so pickup differences are not mistaken for effect changes.

The same capture name does not guarantee the same file or settings. Keep source and setup notes and a copy of the settings. Ensure the recording input still comes from the selected instrument channel. Distinguish mathematical demonstrations from an instrument played through Rigs. For public examples, use your own audio or a source that permits sharing.
