Gain and nonlinear shapes
How do soft and hard clipping differ?
Selected waveshaper
Input sineRaw output
- Raw output Peak
- 0.964×
- Raw output RMS
- 0.802×
- RMS-match multiplier
- 1.000×
Soft clipping rounds the peaks gradually. A nonlinear shape adds harmonics; native pedal results are more complex.
A simple mathematical model, not an OD, Forge, or Velvet pedal model. RMS matching affects only the second waveform; the transfer curve and raw Peak numbers keep their original levels.
How to read this experiment
Not an OD, Forge, or Velvet engine model. It does not calculate the percentage of guitar distortion from a spectrum.
