MIDI controllers and expression pedals

Connect switches or expression pedals to Rigs actions and parameters.

MIDI carries commands rather than instrument audio. Choose MIDI input in Audio and MIDI separately from the audio input device. The MIDI channel, message type, control number, and message value must match the mapping.

Learn a footswitch

  1. Enable the MIDI device you will use.
  2. Choose the target action in controller settings, then press Learn.
  3. Press the intended physical switch.
  4. Check the detected message and press Apply mapping.
  5. Test the selected tap or hold action.

Learn captures the message identity; that step does not necessarily change a preset immediately. CC number identifies the control, while CC value carries its value. PC and CC are different message types. Set the controller's message to match the mapping target, rather than treating a particular CC number as a universal device standard.

Expression

Choose the target parameter, open assignment, and Learn by moving the expression pedal. Set minimum, maximum, invert, and curve where available, then Apply. A 7-bit MIDI CC usually uses values 0–127.

Volume Position acts where that pedal sits in the chain. Master is after the entire rig; the two behave differently for drive and tails. A mapping does not activate a knob disabled by a mode or tempo sync.

If Learn does not detect

Check whether the MIDI device is enabled, the channel matches, and the switch sends the required message type. Check firmware or controller mode against its manual. MIDI Learn is different from Input's Learn noise.

Bluetooth MIDI differs from Bluetooth audio. Light feedback needs hardware that accepts the appropriate protocol; CC or MIDI Clock reception cannot be assumed from a USB connection alone.
